The Boston Red Sox struck prior to the trade deadline. Yesterday, Boston acquired both outfielder Tommy Pham from the Reds and catcher Reese McGuire from the White Sox, two guys who have made some questionable decisions in the past.
Tommy Pham: A Fantasy Football Headcase
Boston made a deal to acquire outfielder Tommy Pham from the Cincinnati Reds. Pham went viral this season after an incident between him and Giants outfielder Joc Pederson. Prior to a Giants-Reds matchup on May 28th, Pham approached Pederson in the outfield and open-hand slapped him. The media got to the root of the altercation…and it was over fantasy football. Apparently, Pederson sent several memes to a fantasy football group chat that the two were a part of trolling Pham. Pham didn’t take too kindly to this and held onto his anger for SEVEN MONTHS before confronting Pederson and executing the slap.
The Reds outfielder was fined $5,000 and suspended 3 games for the incident. When asked about the incident, Pham stated “It’s a matter of discipline”, and does not regret the slap.
In addition to Pham’s outburst against Pederson, he challenged Padres first baseman Luke Voit to a fight on April 19th. During a game between the Padres and Reds, Voit collided with Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson at home plate. Following the Padres 6-2 win, Pham challenged Voit to throw up the dukes and tussle. Pham stated “If Luke wants to settle it, I get down really well. Anything, Muay Thai, whatever. I’ve got a (gym) owner here who will let me use his facility. So, fuck ’em.”
Meat Beatin’ Reese McGuire
While Pham isn’t a criminal, just a hot head, the catcher that’ll be replacing Christian Vazquez has a criminal record. In February of 2020 in Dunedin, Florida, McGuire was arrested and charged with misdemeanor count of indecent exposure in a shopping center parking lot. McGuire was jerking off in the parking lot of a shopping center. What a weirdo. He would go onto plead no contest to the charge of disorderly conduct and was fined $500.
McGuire is batting .225 on the season with 10 RBIs on the season and will backup the Red Sox current starting catcher Kevin Plawecki. Somehow, Chaim Bloom and the Red Sox found the two most bizarre players to make a deal for at the deadline.
Editors Note: The Red Sox also acquired Eric Hosmer early this afternoon. Even though he lacks the bizarre antics of other Sox deadline acquisitions, at least he can play first base. A position the Red Sox have certainly been shopping for.
