I get it. The SEC has two teams in the National Championship game. But, this still needs to be brought up because the issue is as prominent as it’s ever been. It’s also like beating a dead horse, many have said this for a while now, but until the issue of everyone talking about the SEC is over, it will and should continue to be talked about.
Over 75% of the teams in the SEC don’t do a damn thing, but they still talk up about how God-like their conference is. Please, Vanderbilt and Arkansas, give me a break. They didn’t do a thing to help either Georgia or Alabama reach the playoff, but I’m sure they’ll continue to talk big as SEC fans do.
This year, once again, at the beginning of the season, the SEC had teams way too highly ranked in the Preseason Top 25 rankings. They had just under half of their entire conference ranked in the Top 25, and just like in other recent years, half of them didn’t deserve to be ranked.
LSU started the year ranked 13th and ended up going 9-4, which is not too bad unless you lose to Troy at home on your own homecoming. Tennessee was ranked 25th at the beginning of the season but ended up going 4-8 and firing Butch Jones. Florida was ranked 17th but ended up going 4-7 and firing Jim Mcelwain. The teams in this conference are literally making it too easy to trash on them.
The preseason hype over the SEC has to end, but will likely never happen. The SEC will once again end up having five or six teams undeservingly ranked at the beginning of the season next year like they did last year and in years past, but as per usual, about three of the teams will not even be worth a damn by the end of the season. However, is that going to stop the great people at ESPN talking about them? The answer is a big hell no.
What bothers me even more about that conference is how the media just drools over the top and even the average teams in the SEC. I swear every time I watch SportsCenter they are talking about how Alabama is “THE GREATEST TEAM OF ALL TIME.” I mean come on, even Paul Finebaum has to be sick of this shitty masquerade he has to put on anytime he sits in front of a camera. Sure, they are a really good football team, but they did not deserve to even touch the College Football Playoff and now they’re going to take the crown.
The graphic below tells all about how subpar the SEC is compared to other conferences. Including bowl games this year, the SEC is 7-12 in head-to-head matchups against other power five conferences. That is the worst out of the entire field, but the great people in the SEC will try as hard as possible to cover that up. This just goes to show how lackluster and below average the conference is as a whole and how other conferences are already better than the SEC.
That’s another thing. How did Alabama make it to the playoff this year even after losing their last game and not even making it to the SEC championship? Oh yeah, it’s because they’re Alabama, led by the almighty Nick Saban.
Georgia undoubtedly deserves to be in the Playoff. They avenged their lone loss of the season and won the SEC Championship. Obviously, a reason to be in the playoff. I didn’t knock on Georgia in this article. They turned their team around by hiring a deserving candidate in Kirby Smart and became a prominent team once again. To the rest of the teams, fans, and analysts that will continue to talk up how great the conference is, please screw off.
I only hope that someday college football realizes how average that conference down south really is and begins to give other conferences the recognition they really deserve.
All these things can be true:
1) Ohio St had better wins
2) Bama might be the best team in the country
3) Georgia and Bama are the two best teams in the country
4) The other 83% of the SEC is down compared to previous years— Student Union Sports (@StudentUSports) January 2, 2018
