Smart’s Potentially Fatal Mistake

Jake Fromm in the Georgia Bulldogs will be back next year.

Disclaimer: This is merely an opinion. This is my opinion. I am not a fortune teller.

After deciding to break my silence I thought I should talk how much Georgia has pissed me off. As well as what they have done that could hurt them in the long run.

First, why I am pissed about Georgia. For almost two years I was very vocal about my skepticism as far as Georgia being an elite program again. When they won the SEC championship, made the CFP, and then beat Oklahoma, I said it was more of a fluke as well as them taking advantage of a lot seniors who could have made the NFL the year before but decided to come back. When they lost to Alabama I thought that was it for them and they might make as much noise the next year.

Then they went 11-1 with dominant victories over now 10-win teams like Florida and Kentucky. While they were good wins Georgia was supposed to beat those teams, and make the SECCG again. At that point playing Alabama again I thought with the amount of talent they lost and Bama being Bama that Georgia didn’t stand a chance. Then at some point when Georgia was up 28-14 and really handling Alabama I admitted that maybe I was wrong about Kirby Smart. Since that moment they: proceeded to lose that game, throw shade at the CFP committee, and get dominated by Texas in a game they should have won.

Georgia continually makes me look stupid and I am sick of it. But there is one thing I am not looking stupid about. Which leads me to my next point.

My Next Point

The biggest mistake Kirby Smart did was pushing Justin Fields away. The smartest thing Kirby did last year was keep Fromm in instead of Eason. Argue all you want but Georgia was a better team with Fromm as the QB. However, Fromm has his limitations. He is a guy who can handle a small load very very well. In his two years as a starter he has never been the guy to constantly take over games consistently like some of these other quarterbacks. Last year that was fine, as it did get them to the national championship and got them a 13-0 lead at the half.

Now you need something more. You need a guy who can take over a game. Saban and the Crimson Tide were down 13-0 against Georgia and they decided to put in Tua. Sure, Hurts got them there and had only lost two games in two years as the starter but he was never really that guy who can take over a game on a consistent basis. They took that chance in the middle of the biggest game of the year and not only did it pay off with a national championship they are in position to win back-to-back championships. Same with Clemson. Kelly Bryant did nothing to lose his job, but Clemson wanted something more and they took that chance. And it got them Trevor Lawrence.

Conclusion

My point is Georgia could be peaking right now. They are a team who’s close to being a playoff team. Which for most teams would be great. However, a Saban-disciple who is now getting comparisons to Mark Richt–the worlds leader in wasting talent–being on the outside looking in isn’t good enough. They could have been taken the chance like Alabama and Clemson to where they could’ve been in the playoffs. Obviously there is no guarantee that it would’ve worked, but now you will never get the chance to see. Which could haunt Kirby Smart and Georgia for a few years.

Knowing I said all of this, Georgia will probably go undefeated next year with Fromm. Then go beat both Alabama and Clemson, and win the national championship to make me look like an idiot again…
