On Wednesday night, the announcement rang that two Huskies found themselves as top ten finalists for college hockey’s most prestigious award, the Hobey Baker. Three-year captain Jimmy Schuldt, received plenty recognition during the season for the award, but add Patrick Newell to the list.
Newell leads the NCHC in points, and was a unanimous selection for First Team All-NCHC. He won the conferences Forward of the year award and sits at 10th nationally in scoring. He’s an offensive juggernaut for the Huskies and has played a crucial role in the teams season long success.
We’ve previewed Schuldt and his claim to the trophy already this season, but the captain hasn’t slowed down. He, too, was an unanimous addition to the First Team All-NCHC; his second year as a top 10 finalist. He’s led the league in defensive scoring and took home the conference player of the year award on Thursday.
The “Hobey Hat Trick” three finalists announcement takes place on April 4th with the winner announced on April 12th. Until then Schuldt and Newell keep their eyes on what’s ahead of them. The duo’s set to lead the Huskies to an NCHC Frozen Faceoff title Saturday enroute to a potential National Championship. Ranked #1 for a majority of the season, the Huskies are the strong favorites to go the distance once the NCAA Tournament begins.
