As I sit here typing this, I’m listening to our guy Johnny Rambos’ Student Union Summit podcast. It gets to around 5 minutes left in the podcast and they mention my name in their favorite Student Union moments.
Towards the end of my first semester of college, I was dropped a huge bombshell of family news. A family member had been diagnosed with Leukemia. I had no idea what was going on, and had no idea what to do, so I messaged one of the founders of Student Union, Brandon Morris, to talk to him about everything that was going on. We talked for about an hour, with me crying for a solid 45 minutes of that conversation. He was, and still is someone that I can rely on to talk to about my family’s health no matter the time or day.
When you join SU, you are apart of an on boarding process. One of the steps of this process is a phone call with Brandon. During this conversation, he will mention the brotherhood and fraternity that the U is, and as much of a cliche as it sounds, this place is a virtual home to me. Brandon, Johnny, Frank, Anthony, Cody, I could go on listing all the contributors that we have that have made me feel as if I have more brothers then I actually do. This place is a safe place for me, and I’m sure for anyone else that has written for this great company.
As someone who has had their fair share of adversity. This is something that I wouldn’t wish on anyone. My family means the world to me, and for these guys they could relate. They all pitched in to buy tickets for my family to go to the Big Ten Championship game in Indianapolis, this is something that will stick with me for the rest of my life. As someone who understands that these guys are just average guys who may be a little (okay a lot) broke to get something like this for a guy who they’ve never met before? It just speaks to the character of the men in this fraternity that I am beyond proud to be a part of.
Student Union is a place where I hope will push me to be the best writer I can be. With Brandon, and the rest of these guys relying on me to give my best for this amazing up and coming website. This brotherhood is something that will always be apart of my come up as a sports journalist/commentator. All I can say is thank you to all these amazing people that have provided me with anything and everything that I could’ve asked for.
