SU64: West region first round

The only real college football this weekend is Army-Navy and some FCS playoff action. But fear not, because the first round of the Student Union 64 team playoff is here. If you’ve missed previous articles explaining the tournament, you can find links to past articles at the end of this article.

We’ll be starting things off in the West region, where Oklahoma, USC, TCU and Washington are top seeds.

So, this one wasn’t all that surprising.

Wyoming’s defense is actually quite good this year and my true unbiased opinion is that they wouldn’t give up 73 points to Oklahoma. But without Josh Allen, they would stand absolutely no chance. That Baker Mayfield guy? He’s pretty good at online football too.

A guy named Zeb Noland threw 10 passes for Iowa State. Forks Up.

I had Washington State on upset alert here, but Luke Falk is also good at computer football (43-60, 411 yards, 4 TD).

And there is the first upset, one that genuinely surprises me. Utah isn’t that great of a football team and TCU wins this one on average. BIG win for the Pac 12.

Selection committee did a really nice job with Fresno State in my opinion.

So in the end, everything goes mostly chalk out West. Kind of a weird set up going forward, where the bracket now looks like a Mountain West/Pac 12 tournament with Oklahoma thrown in at the top. We will be treated to an Apple Cup II, likely for the right to play Oklahoma at a neutral site in the following round. Boise State-USC should be intriguing and Fresno State looks to have a legitimate path to the regional semifinals.
