Josh Gordon and the Seattle Seahawks are reuniting.
David Canter, Gordon’s agent, confirmed on Thursday that the two sides have reached a one-year deal.
The caveat: Gordon is awaiting reinstatement after he was suspended indefinitely in December after violating the league’s policies regarding substances of abuse and performance-enhancing substances.
But reinstatement seems likely, considering his past suspensions have rooted from marijuana use and the NFL loosened the rules governing players’ use of marijuana in March. However, even with the loosened rules, it remains likely that Gordon will be suspended for the first few games.
The suspension was Gordon’s sixth since the 2013 season and fifth for substance abuse. But the Seahawks were willing to take the risk with Gordon, who caught seven passes for 137 yards for them last season.
The Seahawks claimed the one-time pro-bowler after the New England Patriots released him in November. And last month, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll foreshadowed a reunion.
“Josh did a really good job with us last year,” Carroll told ESPN on Aug. 3. “He fit in really well. He was part of this team by the way we opened and embraced his coming to us but also by the way he adapted. So we are very open to that thought, and we’ll see what happens. I don’t know. I can’t tell you what’s going to happen on that.”
Gordon also adds depth to the Seahawks — much-needed depth at the wide receiver position, more specifically. Phillip Dorsett, John Ursua and Cody Thompson were all sidelined but have since returned. Chances are Gordon will need to earn a spot as the team’s third receiver behind Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf.
