Tennessee Titans 2020 Season Preview

Titans players making a statement on social injustice in the film room

The Tennessee Titans are coming off a season that saw them incredibly overachieve. In 2019 the Titans managed to appear in the AFC Championship game for first time since 2002, but came up short against the Chiefs. Ryan Tannehill took the full time starting job during Week 7 while Marcus Mariota was struggling and had a record of 2-4 at that point in the season. The Titans managed to rally behind Tannehill and Derrick Henry who had a historic season/postseason finishing first in rushing yards and (tied) first in rushing touchdowns.

Offense: 10 of 11

Defense: 9 of 11

Key Additions

OLB: Vic Beasley (FA sign)

The Titans picked up the former 2015 8th overall pick on a one-year deal worth up to $12 million. Despite Beasley being inconsistent since his Pro Bowl year in 2016, he managed to put up 8 sacks on a weak Falcons defensive unit. He has a chance to set himself up for a bigger pay day next offseason if he plays well on his one-year “prove it” deal.

LB: Will Compton (FA sign)

Not the flashiest signing by any means, but Compton has proven to be a feasible option at linebacker for his tackling. The Titans signed him on a one-year $1.25 million deal late in August.

K: Stephen Gostkowski (FA sign)

Gostkowski is a three-time Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots and had his fair share of clutch kicks in Foxborough. Last season the Titans went 8/18 (FGM/FGA) in the kicking department which absolutely was a red flag for the team this offseason. Gostkowski missed just one kick during his injury plagued season in which he only played four games. If he can stay healthy, the Titans have finally found their kicker.

Editors Update:

DE Jadeveon Clowney (FA sign)

As of September 5th, Clowney inked a one-year deal worth up to $15 million with the Titans in hope to improve their pass rush that saw them lose pro bowl DT Jurrell Casey. The new pro bowler in town is no slouch and is motivated to prove he deserved more money this offseason and joins a scrappy team.

Season Outlook

The Titans play in a division that is shared between the Colts, Texans, and Jaguars. Besides the Jaguars, no team will be a slouch in the AFC South in 2020. Do not expect the Titans to repeat nearly the same amount of success they struck in 2019. The defensive side of the ball took a hit when they let (CB) Logan Ryan walk and traded away perennial pro bowler (DT) Jurrell Casey. Derrick Henry will have to somehow top last season (and more) if they want to win the AFC South or sneak into the playoffs again.

Over/Under: 8.5

The 2019 Titans managed to win nine games and come within one game of reaching Super Bowl 54, but the over/under win total for 2020 does not reflect that at 8.5. Despite last year’s success I have them only winning 8 games, so I’m taking the under.

Fantasy Player to Watch: AJ Brown

Titans second-year WR, AJ Brown had a special finish to his rookie season in 2019. AJ led all rookies in receiving yards and had double digit points each week of the fantasy football playoffs (clutch). AJ Brown has the potential to develop into a top fantasy receiver if the Titans increase the passing volume , because in 2019 it was a surprise to no one that the Titans were a high volume running team.
