College football rankings typically don’t mean much to some teams. If you aren’t in the top 10, you’re probably not under the microscope by the playoff committee and therefore aren’t the hot topic of college football. Some teams are undefeated and still not even in the conversation. So let me give you my opinion on the three most underrated teams in college football, in no specific order.
Washington Huskies
Calling Washington “underrated” almost seems disrespectful. Their only loss is to a 5-4 Arizona State, who isn’t amazing, but they played tough and beat them 13-7. But that one loss was enough for the committee to rank the Huskies at 12 in the first CFB rankings. The Huskies, however, are still the best team in the Pac-12 North and have looked sharp since the loss, beating UCLA 44-23 and Oregon 38-3.
Although Jake Browning has not met his pre-season Heisman expectations, he still flaunts a 154.9 QBR, 67.9 completion percentage, and 1907 yards on the year. This team’s best weapon and one of my favorite players to watch is wide receiver/returner Dante Pettis. Against Oregon, he broke Wes Welker’s record for career punt return TD’s. The kid is electric and will continue to be a factor on special teams and on offense for the Huskies. Washington has a tough three games ahead against Stanford, Utah, and Washington State, but look for them to try to squeak into the playoff talk.
Miami Hurricanes
Hear me out, I know they haven’t played any high-caliber teams. But, the Hurricanes are undefeated and that’s really the only argument I need. Critics have talked about how Miami has too many close games with bad teams, but I say a win’s a win, no matter how you do it. Plus, they just beat #13 Virginia Tech by 18 points this past Saturday, which will surely help their case in the playoff talks.
Malik Rosier has produced well for the Hurricanes. Travis Homer has also done a good job of filling in for the injured Mark Walton. Miami’s defense is one of the better defenses in the FBS and only lets up an average 4.64 yards per play and an average 17.6 points per game. They will face their toughest opponent this weekend against #3 Notre Dame. If the Hurricanes can pull off a win on Saturday, they will definitely put themselves in the top 5 if not top 4. And I will be rooting hard for Miami this Saturday. Sorry, Jack. Regardless, the “U” is BACK.
Wisconsin Badgers
Again, please hear me out. Wisconsin has also not played anyone good. In fact, they have not played a single ranked opponent. Nonetheless, the Badgers are #9, still undefeated, and underrated, in my opinion. They have one of the best offensive lines in college football, which results in major success for running back Jonathan Taylor, who is third in the FBS in rushing with 1368 yards and 12 touchdowns. Taylor is an absolute beast and I’m excited to see what he does the rest of this year.
Wisconsin also has one of the best defenses in the NCAA, including a fourth ranked run defense and fifth ranked total defense. The Badgers swarm to the football and dominate opposing offenses. Wisconsin is basically a lock for the Big Ten Championship game, although they have to play Iowa this weekend, who is coming off a huge upset win over Ohio State. Even if they win out, I still only see them making a New Year’s Six Bowl because of the other teams at the top of the rankings.
