On Saturday night, the UTSA Roadrunners shocked the world in a last minute (or last 3 minutes and 49 seconds if you please) comeback of epic proportions.
The Runners had a rough day shooting only scoring 36 points in the first half. The shots just weren’t falling. Jhivan Jackson had it rough, only going for 7-24, and fellow starters Frohnen and De Nicolao only combined for 4 points in the game. All in all it was a bad day for UTSA.
Things were close enough in the first half to keep the crowd engaged. The Monarchs would go up three, the Runners would cut it down to one, the Monarchs would go up two, the Runners would tie it up, only to lose the lead again and repeat the cycle. We as fans knew this was going to be a rough game, so the fact that they were competing was impressive.
Then came the early second half. Old Dominion started to pull away, little by little at one point leading by as much as 18 points. The game seemed pretty much over, fans were leaving, the fans that were staying were proud that we put on a good show, and we all had excepted the out come of this game, Except for the Team.
With a little under 4 minutes to play the Old Dominion Monarchs had a 99.99% chance of winning this game, but there’s a reason they call it a chance not a fact. Nick Allen starts off what will forever be known as “The Comeback” with a dagger three pointer, followed up by back to back threes by Jackson. after a few free throws by ODU and another shot by the Runners we were still down 71-63.
Enter Keaton Wallace.
Wallace hits some important shots to bring the game within four points, then Jackson brings it within two. With half a minute to go Old Dominion makes a bad pass and Byron Frohnen uses every muscle in his body to stay in. They get the ball to Keaton and he hits the corner three easier than smashing an egg on the ground. Not a single person in the building doubted whether or not that ball was going to go in. Runners up by one.
The only problem was that there were still 15 seconds on the clock. The crowd was deafening, everybody from band members to grandmothers were on their feet stomping and screaming as ODU tried to put up the winning shot, but to no avail. The boys in blue and orange pulled off the largest comeback in school history and did it to move up to first place in the conference.
Go Runners.
