Many things have changed in the world since the last time the Chiefs were in the Super Bowl. In just two days we will be seeing something that hasn’t occurred in most of our life times. The Kansas City Chiefs have not appeared in a Super Bowl since January 11th, 1970 when they defeated the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV. Since the last time the Chiefs were in the Super Bowl, many things have changed.
Sports
- The Boston Bruins defeat St. Louis Blues 4-3 in Stanley Cup Final. This would be the Bruins’ 4th Stanley Cup and the Blues’ last Cup appearance until 2019.
- On December 6th, 1969, Texas defeats Arkansas and was named the National Champions by President Richard Nixon, giving Joe Paterno and Penn State a right to gripe.
- The New York Knicks defeat the Los Angeles Lakers in what ESPN named the best Game 7 of all time. This game is most known for Willis Reed’s miraculous return from injury.
- John Wooden and UCLA win their 6th National Championship.
- Terry Bradshaw drafted 1st overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- February 2nd: Pete Maravich becomes first college basketball player to score 3,000 points
- April 7th: Milwaukee Brewers play first game.
- May 17th: Hank Aaron records 3,000 hits, Willie Mays would later become the 10th player to accomplish this feat on July 18th. There have now been 32 players to accomplish this.
- July 12th: Jack Nicklaus wins his 2nd of 3 Open Championships.
- October 28th: Cleveland Cavaliers play first home game.
- November 3rd: Bob Gibson wins his second NL Cy Young Award.
- November 14th: Marshall University football team killed in plane crash.
- Head Coach Paul Brown defeats the Cleveland Browns as coach of the Cincinnati Bengals.
- December 21st, 1969: Vince Lombardi coaches his final football game.
Movies & TV
- John Wayne wins his first and only Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in True Grit.
- January 5th: All My Children Premieres on ABC. It would run for 41 years until it was cancelled in 2011.
- January 10th: Preview Center at Walt Disney World opens. This was the first portion of Walt Disney World to open.
- January 25th: M*A*S*H* is released. This film gave birth to the TV show that ran from 1972-1983.
- September 19th: Mary Tyler Moore Show premiers on CBS
