July 13th, 2020 – Washington’s football team finally decided to drop the nickname “Redskins”, after 10 days of announcing they would be doing a thorough review on the club’s name. A major reason why the name was dropped came after receiving immense pressure from the team’s major sponsors FedEx and Nike. FedEx believed that it was time for the name to go because of mounting political pressure to associate with racist names and symbols. Nike, who has been making the NFL jerseys since 2012, went as far as removing every piece of “Redskins” merchandise from the official website.
Dan Snyder Finally Went Back on His Word
In 2013 Washington’s owner said:
“We will never change the name of the team. As a lifelong Redskins fan, I think that the Redskins fans understand the great tradition and what it’s all about and what it means, so we feel pretty fortunate to be just working on next season.”
“We’ll never change the name. It’s that simple. NEVER— you can use caps.”
In Washington’s official statement released today, they claim that
“Dan Snyder and Coach (Ron) Rivera are working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition rich franchise, and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years.”
Possible New Nicknames
- Warriors
- Redtails
- Presidents
- Generals
- Kings
- Americans
Despite having no word on when the team will be releasing the new name, fans can be confident that one will surely come before the eventual start of the upcoming NFL season (whenever that is). Some die hard Washington fans won’t be very fond of the name change but seems like the right thing to do in today’s day and age.
