If you missed this weekend of college football, I’m sorry. But look no further than right here to catch up on what happened.

• North Carolina’s kicker is savage of the year.

Heisman? Maxwell? Forget it. Nick Weiler wins the first annual “Savage of the Year” award. There is no other chant in college football that is as annoying as the Florida State chop. They overuse it, and it isn’t even that catchy. So watching Weiler taunt the crowd with it made me jump out of my seat. Thank you Nick Weiler, maybe Seminole fans will stop chopping so much.

 

• Game of the year in Death Valley?

The Louisville vs. Clemson matchup on Saturday had every piece to be one of the best games this year. Two undefeated top 25 teams, two of the top Heisman candidates, playoff indications. And this game did not disappoint. Lamar Jackson and Deshaun Watson exchanged haymaker after haymaker and proved that these are two of the best teams in the country. Maybe I’m getting anxious, but I would love to see this rematch in the CFB Playoff.

 

• Chris Peterson haters…Where you at?

I got absolutely ripped last week for my column by giving praise to Peterson’s job at Washington. Everyone’s argument against me was that the Huskies haven’t beat anyone of value since Peterson has been at Washington. Fair enough…but won’t you look at that! Is a dominating win over a Christian McCaffrey led Stanford team count as a quality win? I’ll wait.

 

• I was wrong about Michigan State.

For everyone I ripped about sleeping on Michigan State this year: I’m sorry. This time you all are right. Sparty isn’t the same team they’ve been for the past five years. Injuries have taken a huge toll on this defense, Tyler O’Connor doesn’t seem to have the winning edge Connor Cook had, and the offensive line is one of the worst in the Big Ten. So for all the fans I just ripped about Washington, you have every right to come right back at me about my Michigan State claims.

 

• Tennessee is a sneaky playoff contender.

The best thing to happen to Tennessee this season was almost losing to Appalachian State in the season opener. The hype around the Volunteers this year was only going to lead to missed expectations, but that game made everyone stop talking about them. Since then, they have solid wins over Virginia Tech, Florida, and Georgia. The next two weeks are absolute tests against Texas A&M and Alabama, but they don’t play another ranked team for the rest of the season after them. If they can go 1-1 in those two games, Butch Jones could find himself coaching for a National Championship.

 

• Harbaugh gets his first signature win.

With all the hype surrounding Michigan’s program the past year and a half, who have they beat? I don’t think any true Michigan faithful would consider wins over BYU or Northwestern impressive, and Florida was playing with one of the worst quarterback’s in the FBS in the Citrus Bowl. So come to think of it, Harbaugh really had no signature wins until last week. Michigan’s defense looks like one of the best in the league, and Wisconsin is a real contender. But I think I can speak on behalf of the Wolverine faithful that they won’t be satisfies until they get a win over that one team that wears scarlet and grey.

 

• Beware of the September Miami.

This isn’t the first time Miami has started the year 4-0 in recent history. In 2013, the Hurricanes started the year 7-0 and everyone assumed they were back to their Ed Reed days. They had their signature win over Florida and things looked like they were turning around for fans in South Beach. Then, Miami turned around to lose three straight and end the year at 9-4. And oh yeah, that win over Florida didn’t look too strong when they ended the year 4-8. So everyone thinking that Miami is back…beware. We’ve seen this before.
