The Western Athletic Conference should be absolutely ashamed of themselves from robbing the best mid-major player in the nation of his own conference MVP award. DeWayne Russell not only outperformed Ian Baker of New Mexico State head to head, twice, but he also carried the MVP mentality.
Yes, I may go to Grand Canyon where “DeWeezy” goes, but this goes beyond personal opinion. THIS IS COMMON SENSE.
DeWayne averaged more minutes, more points, more assists, and a whopping .10 point advantage in three point percentage. The stats speak for themselves, yes he had more turnovers, but that is because he was on the court nearly the full game, and was the Lopes most valuable player. The offense was run through Russell, and turnovers can only be expected when you’re handling the ball for 20 seconds of the shot clock every time up the court, for an astounding 38 minutes a game.
This goes beyond the stats. This is personal. This is about image. New Mexico State has been the standard of the WAC conference. GCU is not even eligible for the conference tournament. How could you possibly market a player that doesn’t make your conference money in March come tournament time? Ian Baker is NMSU key component, but he is not the MVP of the conference.
The kid never even got to play for your conference championship. The least you could do is give the award to the deserving player. He was more than deserving, and that is what bothers me.
DeWayne, on my behalf, and anyone else in their right mind, WE would like to apologize on behalf of the Western Athletic Conference for being outrageous and out of line. This ultimately doesn’t mean anything to you DeWayne, but people know who the real MVP is. Congratulations on a great season, career, and a future that is brighter than the WAC.
