Praise the lord, Sheahon Zenger isn’t in Kansas anymore, and from the looks of it, David Beaty doesn’t appear to be far behind.

University of Kansas Chancellor Douglas Girod sent out a staff-wide email, which served as a press release, to announce the firing of the athletic director on Monday morning. The release cited “lack of progress” in certain areas *cough* football team *cough*. Uhhh, ya think?! The Jayhawks have won a total of TWELVE football games since Zenger took over the athletic department in 2011. That’s simply not good enough, and while a lot of fingers are (rightfully) pointed toward the head football coach David Beaty, Zenger hasn’t done enough to create a better situation.
Girod not taking action three months ago also doesn’t the situation, but the writing is on the wall and Zenger is just the first the domino to fall. The football program is in complete disarray, it has been for too long and while donors to the program won’t publicly state their disgust with the department, three wins in three seasons of Beaty, including just one against the FBS (it was Texas, Kansas beat Texas in football and people forget that) really doesn’t cut it.
Unfortunately, it’s like trying to fix a dead lawn. Applying the grass seed, fertilizer, grub killer and firing the athletic director is just the first step. Gutting the coaching staff and watering every day is step two, and finally, over a course of time, hopefully improvement is visible. However, if you don’t realize the ruby slippers don’t fit right away, you’re going to be right back at square one at some point, which is the position KU find themselves in at the moment. *I’m a man of one million metaphors, get used to it*
Anyways, short story even shorter, I’m so glad Zenger is no longer at the head of the whole thing, but his dismissal is just the first step of many in a long, ugly rebuilding process to follow in the next few years.
If you’re a lifelong Jayhawk football fan and will be until the day you die, good for you, your persistence is quite incredible. If you’re like me and watched more Notre Dame or University of Illinois football this season even though you could’ve walked to Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, that’s probably going to remain the plan going forward.
HOLY SHIT I ALMOST FORGOT – SHEAHON ZENGER HIRED CHARLIE WEIS. guuuuuyyyyyysssss that’s baaadddddddd.
