The Heisman finalists were announced Monday night and among the finalists are three transfers. Proving that the transfer portal, is a good thing.
Justin Fields, Joe Burrow, and Jalen Hurts were three of the four finalists for the most prestigious award in college football. The other being Chase Young.
Fields was the number one recruit in the country going to Georgia in 2018. After not being able to beat out Jake Fromm, he transferred to Ohio State where he was able to start right away due to a loop-hole. (Suck It NCAA.)
Burrow did the opposite of Fields. He started at Ohio State and left to join LSU in 2018 after not beating out Dwayne Haskins. He is the clear favorite, after leading the Tigers to the number one seed.
Hurts has been apart of the last three national championship games. As a freshman, he led them to the 2016 game where he lost to Clemson. In 2017 he was benched at halftime in favor of Tua Tagovailoa and went on to beat Georgia. He was a part of the Alabama team that got smoked against Clemson last season. He then transferred to Oaklahoma and has led them to the four seed.
One of the biggest debates in college sports is the transfer portal. Many people (old people) hate it because it “takes the competition out of sports. Isn’t that just a ridiculous statement?
The last two Heisman winners are Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, both of whom transferred to Oklahoma from other schools. They also went on to be number one picks.
Burrow will be the winner this season and will be the number one pick. The third year in a row where this has happened.
So don’t give me this “The Transfer portal proves that athletes are entitled” take. All three of these players have the opportunity to make millions of dollars playing football. Why would you waste that one in a million gift?
This one if for all the transfers. If you are not in a position to succeed like you feel you can go to a program that will allow you to prosper. Wouldn’t you go to a job that offers you a better opportunity?
