The 2018 Draft is now over, and I am going through withdrawal right now. So my only fix for now is talking about prospects for next season. Obviously I expect a lot to change a year from now, but I believe the philosophy for next years draft will be the same.
Year of the D-Line
There was five defensive lineman taken in the first round this year, which is a lot for a position group, but we could see even more in 2019. It also seems like Ohio State Defensive End Nick Bosa is my favorite–and a lot of other peoples favorite–to go first overall next year. However, there are many more interesting prospects that could go in round one, such as:
- Nick Bosa DE, Ohio State
- Ed Oliver DT, Houston
- Jeffery Simmons DT, Mississippi State
- Clelin Ferrell DE, Clemson
- Joe Jackson DE, Miami
- Zach Allen DE, Boston College
- Raekwon Davis DT, Alabama
- Rashan Gary, DT Michigan
QB Class Seems “Meh”
This past year of QBs was not historical or anything, but in comparison it appears leaps and bounds more talented than the upcoming bunch. Drew Lock from Missouri is the early favorite for best QB in the class. That isn’t really a good sign. While I think Lock is a pretty good QB and he is coming off a great season, I still hesitate. He took advantage of playing Missouri State, Idaho, and UConn, as well as Florida, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Vanderbilt, who all had mediocre-to-bad seasons. Overall, I think it will be silly for teams to be making the trades that have been made in recent years for this class. While I don’t think this class is awful, I do think you could wait until Day 2 to get the QB you want.
Class as a Whole
Every year a class either gets marked as “offense-heavy” or “defense-heavy” and this draft class seems to be in favor of defense-heavy, particularly in the front seven. The deepest position groups at first glance seems to be defensive ends, defensive tackles, and offensive tackles. This will not be a flashy draft like this past year, but games are won and lost in the trenches, and this class will help determine those winners and losers.
Disclaimer: This is months before the college season starts, and nearly a full year before the next draft, so if things change and this is completely wrong, then I am sorry I can’t predict the future. If I am right, then clearly I am a genius.
