Earlier this week, several Virginia Tech football players announced that they would be leaving VT to enter the transfer portal.
The list of leaving players includes WR Eric Kumah, RB Deshawn McClease, TE Chris Cunnigham, and QB Josh Jackson.
Out of the list, the biggest loss is definitely Eric Kumah. Kumah is a tall receiver who is good at going up and getting 50/50 balls. He most likely left due to VT’s wide receiver coach Holmon Wiggins accepting a job at Alabama.
McClease is most likely transferring because head coach Justin Fuente likes to use several running backs and therefor playing time is up in the air.
Even though Josh Jackson was the starting QB this year, I don’t see him leaving as a devastating loss for the Hokies. I’d say he was a pretty average QB and his backup, Ryan Willis, looked better than him when he came in after Jackson broke his leg against ODU. Plus, VT still has redshirt freshman Quincy Patterson who was an Elite 11 QB and shows a lot of promise.
So besides losing Kumah, I’m not too worried about the players that have left. I’m also not upset at them for leaving. Hokie Nation should thank them for their time here and wish them the best.
However, what I am worried about is if Fuente has potentially lost the locker room. Hopefully this is all the players that decide to transfer.
