UCONN Lands Former 4-Star Recruit Sidney Wilson

Another day, another prominent transfer in the Northeast. Yesterday, Taurean Thompson announced he would be attending Seton Hall this upcoming year. Now, 4-star recruit Sidney Wilson, a prized commit for head coach Chris Mullin and St. John’s, has announced he will be leaving the Johnnies in favor of UCONN. Wilson was enrolled in St. John’s for just one week.

Wilson, who is originally from the Bronx, NY, had committed to St. John’s after a year away at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire. It was only after his mother’s death in the spring of 2015 that Wilson decided to attend Brewster Academy. Per Rivals.com, Wilson’s father, Sidney Wilson, Sr. was quoted as saying “[Sidney] just wasn’t happy being back at home and it was just the next best alternative as far as the coaching staff and the people that can relate to what he is going through. This can help him mature and still not be too far away from home.” Wilson was an AAU superstar for the New Heights travel program, averaging 17 points and 6 rebounds per game. Wilson was ranked as the 33rd-best small forward in the 2017 class by ESPN. Before pledging to St. John’s, Wilson held offers from 22 schools, notably UCONN, Louisville and Syracuse.

While he will have to sit out the 2017-2018 season due to NCAA transfer guidelines, Wilson has reportedly applied for a waiver that would make him eligible immediately. If he were eligible immediately, Wilson could see significant time behind Terry Larrier, who averaged 13.5 points in four games before tearing his ACL last season. If not, Wilson will have a full year to learn and develop under Larrier, before becoming the eventual heir to the small forward position. Head coach Kevin Ollie and the Huskies will look to improve on a 16-17 season from a year ago.

The Huskies will open at home against Colgate University on November 10.
