The top news coming out of Coach Jim Mora’s press conference today is that starting quarterback Joe Fagnano is out for the season with a shoulder injury. Fagnano transferred to UConn this offseason from Maine after passing for 2,231 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. He would go on to beat out Taquon Roberson and Zion Turner, earning the starting job. Over the two games he played in, Fagnano went 18-35 with 173 yards and 1 interception. While he did struggle against North Carolina State and went down early against Georgia State, it’s disappointing to see him go down.
Now with Fagnano out, the Huskies look to junior Taquon Roberson. Roberson transferred to UConn last season after playing two seasons at Penn State, but much like Fagnano, Roberson suffered a season ending injury early last year. In the first game vs Utah State last season, Roberson went down with a knee injury. Where I do feel confident is that Roberson looked poised against Georgia State when he took over for Fagnano. He went 19-30 with 216 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception.
Starting the season 0-2 isn’t ideal, but with a new quarterback, I’m hoping there’s a boost of energy on the offensive side of the ball. It’s what is needed if UConn has any hopes of making a bowl game like last year.
