It’s no secret that the Adam Gase led New York Jets are far and away the worst football team in the NFL. Their point differential is -144 so far this season. They are on pace to beat the record held by the 1976 expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers by one point. The Jets are so bad that of their seven of their eight losses have been by at least two scores. They are averaging one total touchdown per game. One of their total eight touchdowns was defensive, meaning that they’ve only scored seven offensive touchdowns this year. To put that into perspective, the 31st team in touchdowns this year is the New York Giants with 14.

If the season continues in the direction it’s going, the Jets will go down as arguably the worst NFL football team ever. A major problem with this team is that they lack talent, which is evident, but an even greater problem is their head coach. Adam Gase, the head coach of the Jets, is, in my opinion, the worst coach in the NFL. Since his first year as a head coach, he boasts a 20-36 overall record. He’s on pace to finish this season with an 0-16 record, which would be the third team to do so, while also having a historically bad offense.

The big question is: How is Adam Gase still coaching?

His Big NFL Break

Gase started his NFL coaching career in Detroit as a scouting and offensive assistant. He then moved on to San Francisco and Denver as an offensive assistant and receiving coach respectively.

When in Denver, he was promoted to offensive coordinator. Luckily for Gase, he inherited Hall of Fame Quarterback Peyton Manning. Manning broke the record for passing touchdowns in a season throwing 55. The Broncos also ended the year as the highest-scoring team in the history of the NFL, scoring 606 total points and the second-highest in total yards, behind the 2011 New Orleans Saints. Gase, being the offensive coordinator, got a lot of credit for this, most of which I think is undeserved. Even if you do want to give him credit for that season, he should also get credit for the atrocious offensive showing that year in the Super Bowl. If you’re in control of the offense you can’t let the most prolific offense in the history of the game be held to eight points.

With that being said, having Peyton Manning as your QB will make you seem like a genius even if you aren’t.

The Two Years After

He coached another Bronco’s season as the OC in 2014. A season where the Broncos averaged 30.1 points per game and averaged 402.9 yards per game. That was good enough for 2nd in points and 4th in yards in the NFL.

Jon Fox and the Chicago Bears chose to bring him on as OC for the 2015 campaign. With Jay Cutler at QB, Gase and the Bears finished 23rd in scoring and 21st in yards per game. In the previous year, 2014 the Bears were the exact same in both scoring and yards per game. That season proved that Gase couldn’t coach a team to the heights of the Broncos without a top-five QB.

Shockingly, that showing was good enough for the Miami Dolphins to make him their next head coach.

Becoming a Head Coach

The Dolphins brought Gase in for the 2016 season to be an offensive guru and help Ryan Tannehill get over the hump of mediocrity. Unfortunately for the Dolphins, Tannehill regressed greatly under Gase, throwing for 1,200 fewer yards and five fewer touchdowns. He also threw the same number of interceptions. During that season the Dolphins finished 17th in scoring and 24th in yards. They still managed a 10-6 record and made the playoffs, but got trounced in Wild Card Weekend.

He spent two more years as the Dolphins head coach and was unable to reach the playoffs again. Gase’s QB whispering powers didn’t work on Tannehill in those years either. In 2017, the Dolphins ranked 28th in points and 25th in yards. 2018, Gase’s last year wasn’t any better, ranking 26th in points and 31st in yards.

It’s safe to say that Adam Gase was not meant to be a head coach at the NFL level. The supposed offensive mastermind couldn’t manage to coach an average offense during his time in Miami.

How he got another head coaching opportunity after that performance absolutely baffles me.

Really Jets, Really??

For a man that was so abysmal at his job, it’s so confusing why the Jets hired him as their head coach.

In Gase’s first season in New York, he was 31st in points and dead last in yards. This season he flip-flopped, now he’s dead last in points and 31st in yards. Let’s also not forget that he possessed Le’Veon Bell in 2019 and badly misused him throughout the entirety of the season. Bell’s numbers that year were the lowest of his career, outside of his 2015 campaign, where he only played six games due to injury.

At this point in the season with the Jets sitting at 0-8 and absolutely horrendous on offense, I don’t know how he still has a job. This guy should’ve been fired yesterday, so what are the Jets waiting for? He is not your answer, nor is he any team’s answer. If you stink at your job in real life you get the boot, and you’d be lucky to get a second chance. So why in the world is Adam Gase, the worst offensive specialist ever, still around.

After having a top-three greatest QB ever, Gase has proved that he is incompetent as, not only a head coach but as a play-caller.

Please, New York, I beg you, get rid of him. There are so many other candidates immensely more qualified than him.
