Well, well, well… After a MONSTER 200 yard, 5 touchdown performance in Week 1, Joop Plesec added another 150 and a score in Week 2. Officially, he has 357 yards and 6 scores. Both of those numbers lead the MHSAA.
I hate to say I told you so, but I told you so. This young man has shown the kind of heart and determination that his great grandfather would be proud of. Especially because of what the young man announced yesterday, his first official offer from Western Michigan,
Western Michigan History
Located just 51 minutes south on US Highway 131, Western Michigan University is the first school to officially offer Joop. His offer comes after gaining 2 stars through 2 weeks. Western Michigan has had a couple of highly talented receivers come out of the modest Midwest college town. Most recently, Corey Davis who was taken 5th overall in 2017 by the Titans. He was apart of the P.J. Fleck squad that went 12-0 in the regular season, beat Ohio in the MAC Championship, and lost the perfect season in the Cotton Bowl to 8th ranked Wisconsin.
11 Years earlier, another receiver was drafted in the 2nd round at 52 overall, that was Greg Jennings. Jennings, from Kalamazoo, had a very successful career as a member of the Green Bay Packers. That includes winning a Super Bowl that Jennings had 2 touchdown catches in.
Western Michigan also produced another star in the early 90’s, but most of his success has come off the football field. Drafted in the 11th round in 1991, the former defensive end/linebacker and more widely known actor, Terry Crews was a Bronco in his formative years.
Running Back History
The Broncos have only had one running back drafted since the NFL/AFL merger. That was Roger Lawson in the 1972 draft when he went in the 15th round. Despite that, if Joop decided to choose Western Michigan, he would follow in the footsteps of LeVante Bellamy. The graduated running back ran for 3720 yards in his Bronco career. That’s good enough for 3rd in school history.
With 6 weeks left in the MHSAA regular season, we will see if Joop has what it takes to get more offers or if Joop isn’t what I thought he was.
P.S. When I was trying to make all of this as realistic as possible I saw that a team in Michigan high school football went 0-8 so I thought they played 8 games for a regular season, but the answer is actually 9. I’m sorry I’ve failed you all.
