Alabama and Georgia have been the talk of college football this year. Alabama was expected to be this good, considering this is how they look every season. Georgia, however, is 8-0, despite having an 8-5 record last year. They’ve made huge strides and continue to climb up the ranks, now listed at #2 in the latest AP poll. Georgia is showing what they’re capable of and it seems that they will almost certainly meet up with Alabama in the SEC Championship on December 2nd.
Year after year, Alabama is ranked throughout the entire season at #1 in the polls.
They dominate every team they play and nobody really stands a chance against them until they get to the CFP. Even in the SEC Championship, the team from the East division generally does not put up a fight. In the past 3 conference championships, Alabama has beaten their opponents from the East by a combined 81 points. Their closest game being in 2015 against Florida, where they won by 14.
The Tide has the best defense in all of college football. Opposing offenses average only 3.93 yards per play against them, which is the lowest in the FBS. They allow the fewest yards per game, as well. Their offense, while also very solid, is not what carries their team. But it is still championship-caliber. The Crimson Tide is 7th in the country in total rushing yards, which is mainly from the running back duo of Damien Harris and Bo Scarbrough, along with quarterback Jalen Hurts. Alabama has 4 games left, 3 of which are against ranked teams, but unless one of those teams can somehow upset the Tide, they will again be looking at an SEC Championship birth.
Georgia is quite a surprise this year.
Nobody thought a team that was 8-5 would ever be undefeated a year later. Especially after losing starting quarterback Jacob Eason in the first game of the season to a knee injury. That wasn’t an issue for them because true freshman Jake Fromm has taken the reigns and done very well leading the Bulldog offense. Fromm has 1263 passing yards on the year, with only 4 interceptions. The Bulldogs running game is also a huge factor, with the duo of Nick Chubb and Sony Michel combining for 1,394 rushing yards on the season.
However, their defense is what has college football fans talking. The Bulldogs have the 4th ranked passing defense and 6th ranked rush defense. They hold opponents to 11.9 points per game and have shut down nearly every offense they play. They even held Heisman candidate Josh Adams to only 53 yards on 19 attempts. Georgia’s toughest opponent for the rest of the season is Auburn, but if they can win the next four games, then they will surely be in contention of a College Football Playoff appearance.
So, the question I ask is, who is the best team in the SEC?
Most college football fans will confidently say it’s the Crimson Tide, but I think the Bulldogs would give them a run for their money. Both teams’ defenses are strong and let up very few points. Granted, both teams have not played very talented teams as of yet. The toughest team either team has faced is Notre Dame, where Georgia won 20-19. Alabama, in my opinion, is the best team in the SEC and FBS, but if they play each other, Georgia definitely will have a good shot at beating them.
