The backbone to any college hockey team is the goalie. If your team doesn’t have a goalie that can cover the net, you won’t win games. The best teams have a goalie that’s not just average, they have a goalie that’s showing up consistently. These are the top 3 goalies in college hockey.

3. David Hrenak is the goalie of the future for SCSU.

Number 3 on my list is St. Cloud’s David Hrenak. St. Cloud State has been outstanding this season. Hrenak is second in save percentage and fourth in goals against average, posting two shutouts, and winning five games. His record is 5-1-0, with his only loss coming against Denver’s strong offense. He has had two incredible games, the first of which being his second shutout against Omaha, who put up a strong 40 shot on goal night. His last game was a huge win against UND. Hrenak plays alongside the other SCSU goalie, Jeff Smith. Hrenak is only a freshman and he’s in the lineup for Team Slovakia at the World Juniors this year. Hrenak is making an impression with 2 of his 5 wins being shutouts. David Hrenak is easily one of the biggest up-and-coming goalies in college hockey.

2. Jake Kielly has shown up for Clarkson when they need him too.

Second on the list is Jake Kielly. He leads college hockey with five shutouts and comes in third for GAA. Kielly, a sophomore from Eden Prairie, Minnesota, has led the Clarkson team to an impressive breakout year. Jake Kielly also holds a record of 15-3-1, with his only sweep coming from Minnesota earlier this year. Kielly is the backbone to this Clarkson team. After going 16-15-5 last year, Kielly is already about to match his wins not even halfway through his second season in net. The 6’2” goalie has played an outstanding 1139 minutes this year, proving to Clarkson that he is their guy in net. The team consistently shuts down the opposing teams’ offenses;  five shutouts are no laughing matter.

1. Cale Morris is the number 1 goalie in the league.

Cale Morris, the University of Notre Dame goalie, has been the center of attention in the Big Ten. He has consistently put up numbers that no one else can follow. Morris is leading the nation in wins, second in GAA, second in shutouts, and first the nation in save percentage. He keeps getting better too. Morris is on a team that supports him, and with the strong team he has in front of him, Morris could lead Notre Dame to great things. Morris was stuck as number two goalie last year behind the future NHL’er Cal Peterson,  but he is the center of attention now. Notre Dame will be continuing their winning ways with Morris in net.
