2021 recruit Clinton Burton Jr. verbally committed to playing in Florida’s secondary last fall but recently changed his mind. The four-star cornerback announced this weekend he was retracting his decision and joining Boston College’s 2021 recruiting class via Twitter.

In his initial tweet on Friday, Burton, the 18th player to commit to Boston College for 2021, said that joining the Eagles is the next step in “building my legacy.” He then reflected on his decision Saturday evening, when he tweeted, “me of great integrity. This is one of the best decisions I have ever made. If you can’t see that now, you will later.”

The 74th-ranked prospect overall and fifth-best cornerback in the class, per ESPN, Burton will bolster Jeff Hafley’s defense. According to ESPN, Burton’s reversal gives the Eagles their highest-ranked commitment in program history. He is also the school’s fourth ESPN 300 commitment since the rankings system began in 2009.

Burton is the No. 10 recruit in the state of Maryland and the No. 20 cornerback in his class, according to 247Sports National Recruiting Analyst Brian Dohn’s player scouting report. He also attracted offers on the table from 20 other programs, including Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan.

Dohn said he has the frame necessary to compete as a sub-200-pound defensive back. His solid, compact build could be an x-factor in the ACC — and will definitely help him further develop the physicality he will need to make up for his lack of size when lining up against elite wide receivers, Dohn said in the report.

The analyst further explained that Burton is intellectual, tough and fearless. Dohn said, in Burton, Boston College is getting a fierce competitor with speed, quickness, composure and potential to “develop into a mid-round NFL draft selection.”
