Ever hear one of those scouting stories like, “Oh I found (insert player) while watching film on (insert player)”. Well, I’m not a scout. But I was watching some film on Quarterback Logan Woodside (really just his highlight tapes) and noticed this dynamic, fast and sure handed wide receiver making incredible catches all over the field. Insert Diontae Johnson: first team All-MAC receiver, first team punt returner and second team All-MAC returner.

The 5-11 Junior out of Ruskin, Florida, isn’t getting nearly enough national credit. Clearly the greatest football conference on earth, the MAC, notices him. Johnson made 2 all conference first teams and one second team. I might be wrong, but I don’t think that’s ever happened before.

He’s an electric playmaker and can make all the difficult catches that I literally gasped and whispered “Oh shit”. He averaged 148 all purpose yards per game. He also had 74 receptions for 1,278 yards and 14 touchdowns.

I assume Toledo will be just forcing him the ball next season, making it interesting to see how he plays without a talented quarterback like Logan Woodside. Woodside will probably be a mid to late round pick, so coming from the MAC, that means a helluva lot.

He reminds me of Ryan Switzer in a way that he’s going to make an impact in more than the receiving game.  After being named All-MAC on both teams for his returning abilities, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him take the next step and be an All-American returner next season. I also expect his stats to shoot up. It wouldn’t be surprising to see him catch for about 1,500 yards or so. Even with a new quarterback, he’ll have plenty of chances to show off his talent.
