Was This the Goal of the Tournament?

Kasper Dolberg made his presence known in the Round of 16 against Wales, scoring twice which led the way to Denmark’s commanding 4-0 victory over the Welsh. The 23-year-old, who plays for OGC Nice in the French Ligue 1, first scored in the 27th minute on a remarkable goal outside of the 18-yard box, as he sent a curling missile of a shot into the back-right corner of the net.

He added his second goal of the match and doubled Denmark’s lead just after the 2nd half began in the 48th minute. On a poor clearance by Wales’ Williams, Dolberg was in the right place at the right time and smashed the ball yet again into the bottom-right corner of the net.

Making the Most of an Opportunity

Dolberg was only in the starting lineup due to Yussuf Poulsen being unavailable for the match, but Dolberg certainly looked comfortable, poised, and ready to play on one of the biggest stages. While he has struggled to find the back of the net in 2021, scoring only 6 goals in 25 games in Ligue 1, this could be a big turning point for the young striker.

Kasper Dolberg is the first player to score a brace at a major tournament for Denmark since Nicklas Bendtner vs Portugual at Euro 2012. Dolberg and Denmark also broke Wales’ streak of allowing only one goal or less in eight straight games. On top of that, Denmark is the first team to net the ball four times against Wales since October of 2010, when the Welsh lost to Switzerland 4-1 in the UEFA European Championship Qualifiers.

When Do They Play Next?

The Danes will face the winner of Netherlands vs Czech Republic in the quarterfinals on July 3rd in Baku.
