Super-star defensive end, J.J. Watt, has decided to take his talents to the NFC and join the Arizona Cardinals. Watt has signed a two year deal worth $28 million, along with $23 million guaranteed. He can earn up to $31 million if he gets 10 or more sacks in 2021 or 2022, per Mike Florio. J.J. Watt was released by the Houston Texans February 12 after spending 10 seasons with the team.

He was expected to make his decision this week, but I’m not sure if anyone could’ve guessed Arizona this early. Despite reports of Watt updating his Peloton bio, hinting that Green Bay, Cleveland, and Buffalo were all still in the sweepstakes as of this morning, he still chose Arizona.

J.J. Watt’s response

The Cardinals now add a three-time Defensive Player of the Year (tied for most ever, Lawrence Taylor) and a five-time First-team All-Pro to their up and coming defense. The front seven also includes the No.8 overall pick in last year’s draft, Isaiah Simmons, and two-time First-team All-Pro, Chandler Jones.

Arizona finished fourth last year in total sacks with 48. It’s safe to say that they can only expect similar production or even better, if healthy.

The NFC West is also already one of the most competitive divisions in football, featuring the Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers, L.A. Rams, and themselves.

He also reunites with former teammate (and super-star himself) DeAndre Hopkins. Credit to the Cardinals for being proactive and landing one of the biggest super-stars in the game.
