It was announced on Thursday that the University of Nebraska has parted ways with athletic director Shawn Eichorst. Eichorst has served in the roll since 2012, when he came over from Miami. The Nebraska programs have struggled in recent years, especially since Eichorst fired Bo Pelini and replaced him with current head football coach Mike Riley. There was controversy surrounding the move then, as Pelini went 77-27 in his time at Nebraska, and even moreso now that the Huskers are coming off of a loss against Northern Illinois at home.

Nebraska prides themselves on athletic excellence, especially on the gridiron, where they haven’t been more than mediocre in years. With the firing of Eichorst, expect Mike Riley, who was just given an extension last week for whatever reason, to feel his seat heat up even more and talks of a replacement to buzz around Lincoln. The hiring of Mike Riley was the biggest move of Eichorst’s career at Nebraska and looks as if he blew it.

For the next few months, the AD search will continue and the head coaching rumors will swirl. Nebraska has the potential to be a nationally relevant program again as they have all of the resources in the world to be top-tier. The next AD better get the hires right because patience is running thin in Lincoln.
