In a move that has been telegraphed for months, the University of Nebraska has finally parted ways with head coach Mike Riley. Many thought this would come much earlier in the season, especially after the blowout losses to Wisconsin and Ohio State. It seems as if another home blowout to Iowa was the final straw.

It was nice of Nebraska to at least let Riley finish out the season, but they would have been better served to fire him right after the game last night in the same manner that Bret Bilema was let go rather than having him give a press conference talking about next season, knowing full and well that he would not be apart of it. Mike Riley is a super nice guy, which is probably one of the reasons he got this job, and I’d like to wish him well at his next destination. However, it had been time for Nebraska to move in a different direction for awhile.

Riley went 19-19 in Lincoln after achieving moderate success at Oregon State. On October 15, Bill Moos was hired as the new athletic director at the university from Washington State, signaling that change was on it’s way.

Nebraska is a proud program who feels as if they should be competing for at least Big Ten West titles every year after having their glory days in the 90’s. I think that the university has the resources and fan base to run a top notch program if they could get the right guys in place. It will remain to be seen if they can find the right guy, but former Husker QB and the currently undefeated UCF coach Scott Frost seems to be the best fit.
