Last week, there was significant PAC 12 news regarding the transfer portal. Tyler Shough, who started every game but saw his playing time dwindle late in the season, is leaving the program. Given this news, it’s time to look at his game and the places he might fit in 2021.

A Dual Threat Quarterback

Shough got off to an extremely hot start in 2020 leading the Ducks to a 3-0 start. He had a 4/1 touchdown to interception ratio in those three games and added over 60 YPG on the ground. Unfortunately for the QB and the Ducks, the season started to go down hill after that. Shough began to cede time to graduate transfer Anthony Brown, who played well in the Fiesta Bowl.

Part of this was due to Shough’s turnover problems. This is something his next destination will absolutely have to address. He turned the ball over eight times in total, including four crucial interceptions in his last four games. Even with the turnover problems, those first three games showed a high ceiling. With three years of eligibility potentially left, a coaching staff will have plenty of time to develop the Arizona native.

Possible Transfer Destinations:

A couple things have to be taken into account here. First, is whether or not the NCAA will continue to grant immediate eligibility in the coming year. Second is whether or not Shough is willing to leave the West Coast for the rest of his college career. Without further ado, lets take a look at some programs that could be in the market for the former Duck.

Texas A&M: Gone is Aggie stalwart Kellen Mond after four years as the starter with two sophomores set to compete for the 2021 gig. With them having minimal game time, reaching out to someone with starting experience could be possible.

Notre Dame: Similar to the Aggies, Notre Dame is dealing with the graduation of a program icon in Ian Book. Also the same, there is minimal experience in the Quarterback room. Shough has shown dual threat ability that might intrigue Irish coach Brian Kelly.

Boise State: The premier west coast program outside of the PAC 12. They have shown no hesitation to take QB transfers recently with Jack Sears from USC. With a new coach coming in, they might want someone in the QB room with some Power 5 starting experience.

Memphis: With the potential of Brady White finally leaving, Memphis could be in the transfer market. The QB friendly system combined with Shough’s tools could lead to prolific numbers. It could also keep the Tigers towards the top of the GO5 structure.
