I’m not writing this blog happily. With this news, there’s not much to be thrilled about. A player that I’ve been a massive fan of since he was in high school (not weird) seems to be downtrodden. Drew Pyne, a New Canaan High alum, will be transferring back to Notre Dame for the 2024 spring semester to earn his degree in American Studies and minor in business economics. Pyne only needs 15 credits to graduate and will then be able to transfer to another program in the fall as a graduate transfer player.

In his first three seasons with the Irish, Pyne was stellar. 2022 was his breakout season as he had to come in to replace the injured Tyler Buchner. As a starter in 2022, he got Notre Dame to an 8-3 record while passing for 2,021 yards, 22 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. Following the 2022 season, Pyne entered the transfer portal and committed to Arizona State. Injuries kept him off the field and he only saw time in two games for the Sun Devils in 2023. In those two games, he threw for 273 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions.

Having been with two programs in his career and being inconsistent, I’m not sure where Pyne will play in 2024. Ideally, I’d like to see Pyne return home. The UConn Huskies haven’t had a consistent quarterback the past few seasons and Pyne would be a great fit. Even if he doesn’t end up at UConn, I don’t see Pyne going to a Power Five school. His play hasn’t warranted it, and it’s in his best interest to play at either a Group of Five or FCS school. Wherever he ends up, I’ll be rooting him on.
