#1 UTSA 7 – Arizona State… 49
The season opener was a good indicator for the way the season was going to go for our Runners. A seemingly never ending cycle of a first down, then not a mere 15 seconds later a third and a mile staring one of our what seems like 60 QB’s we played right in their face. usually they wouldn’t get the yards needed and good ole Yannis Routsas, my personal MVP would come out and punt a ball so well that the heavens themselves would sing the glory of that magnificent leg of his.
The game was rough. The Sun Devil’s, under the direction of new head coach Herm Edwards, seemingly scored at will on the birds, who didn’t reach the end zone until garbage time in the fourth quarter. As a member of the Spirit of San Antonio marching band watching this game at one of our members house it was miserable. the whole trumpet section sat there in almost silence as we watched the massacre unfold.
It was hard to watch when the game kicked off and the Devils ran it all the way back for six, then on the next drive our one starting QB Cordale Grundy threw for an interception on his first ever pass as a Roadrunner. It really hurt. We played a truly bad game where everyone was to blame. After this game we wouldn’t win until we played rival Texas State, which was a trial of its own.
#2 UTSA 25 – Texas State 21
In the I-35 “rivalry” between the Roadrunners and the Bobcats the runners are undefeated, sitting at 3-0 all time. Usually this game is a thorough beat down by the runners resulting in a fantastic defeat of the lesser team. But this year was different.
It was by all accounts a very good football game, the kind that real rivals play. At any given moment during the game the Bobcats could have very well gotten away with it but our defense, the second strength of this team behind our punter, held their own. “Last Chance U” star Lorenzo Chancelor had a scoop and score off of a TXST fumble in the first drive of the game and that had the fans pretty excited. The runners then scored again soon after on a toss from Grundy to Oogle-Kellog. As the game progressed we began to realize that this game was not going to be as easy as years passed. points were traded back and forth but finally a Safety won the game for the Roadrunners. We won rough but for the first time this season we won.
#3 UTSA 20 – Rice #
MUahahahahahahahahaha For those of you that dont know, Rice is the home of “Intellectual Brutality” and let me tell you what, there was nothing brutal about how Rice played. They made us look like the Crimson Tide how bad they played. Turnovers, bad tackling, bad passes, and absolutely no energy other than the Roadrunner fans in attendance led to an all out bad performance from the Owls. Now let the record show that UTSA didnt play very well, that is just how bad Rice is at football.
#4 UTSA 3- Louisiana Tech 31
Look if I’m being totally honest I don’t want to talk about this game. It was hot, it was Homecoming, and it hurt really bad.
#5 UTSA 21 – North Texas 24
This was the best game of the year. There I said it. We played a great game, good offense that moved the ball well, defense that looked like themselves again, and Special teams that was in full form, until the last play. Now I’ll say it now I don’t blame our wonderful kicker Jared Sackett for this loss a dumb penalty put us back right out of range. This game felt like magic, like the old saying says, you show up for your rivals, and the Runners definitely showed up that day. Towards the end of the first half we had several drives to really get us back in the game. The crowd was roaring, the rowdy golf cart horn was blaring and the defense had goal line stops that would make the Doomsday Defense proud.
We may have lost this game, but the way QB Bryce Rivers played like a season veteran, moving the ball down the field with ease, extending plays, and truly magnificent touchdown. If anything comes from this article let it be this, Bryce should be our QB moving forward, he led the best game we played all season, and even though we lost we fans walked out of their with our heads high because those boys, every single one of them left it all on the field.
