The Hobey Baker is college hockey’s Heisman Trophy. The award goes to the most outstanding player in the nation and cares not for a player’s professional prospects. Michigan State’s last Hobey Baker winner was goaltender Ryan Miller, who is still the only goalie to win the prestigious award. East Lansing might be celebrating Taro Hirose’s season soon enough.
Hirose’s quietly putting together a solid case to be the front runner for this year’s award. The junior forward for the Spartans has amassed eleven goals and twenty-four assists in just thirty games so far.
Taro Hirose’s 35 points in thirty games gives him a 1.59 points per game, easily the best in the country. His playmaking ability is unsurpassed in college hockey and his passing ability along with his silky mitts has created a lot of offense for players on the ice with him.
Michigan State has struggled mightily to win games consistently. Hirose & his linemates have been one of few bright spots for the Spartans this season.
Hirose adding a Hobey Baker to his trophy case would be a tremendous achievement for a Spartan team that is still building momentum in the Danton Cole era.
