One of college basketball’s most prominent jobs was filled this past Monday Afternoon (April 5th) . North Carolina’s Board of Trustees met to approve the hire of assistant coach Hubert Davis. Davis had been an assistant for the Tar Heels since 2012.

This comes in the aftermath of the retirement of a coaching legend. Last week, Roy Williams called it quits on a Hall of Fame Career after 18 seasons as UNC’s head coach. He is responsible for three national championships in his tenure and surely can be argued as the school’s greatest coach.

Keeping it in the Family

From the time of Williams’ retirement it was presumed that the Tar Heels would attempt to keep the job in the hands of those familiar with the program. Front runners were thought to be Davis of course and UNC Greensboro rising star Wes Miller.

The hire is no surprise to those in college basketball circles. Davis is a Tar Heel legend. He averaged over 20 points a game his senior year and helped UNC reach a final four in 1991. Since, he enjoyed a long NBA career and was on of the hosts of ESPN’s College Gameday prior to becoming an assistant at his Alma Mater.

Going with Davis represents a clear vision for the basketball program. That is to try and continue what Williams built at the school. It can be assumed that the new head coach will continue to recruit to a style that was fast paced and fun to watch. At 50 years old, this sets up as a long term hire for one of the sports elite programs.
