St. Cloud State University was voted the undisputed number 1 in the nation this week in the latest USCHO poll. With a very impressive 7-0-0 record, they are proving to be the best team in college hockey. The Huskies are having a strong start to the season and are determined to continue to prove that throughout the rest of the year. Is this early success an indicator for the rest of the year, though?

St. Cloud is ranked number one in the nation this week.

A very big accomplishment for the Huskies in central Minnesota. One of the final two teams that remains unbeaten and untied are showing what they’re made of. They have always been overshadowed in Minnesota by the Golden Gophers in the twin-cities and the Bulldogs of the north shore. Now, the Huskies are showing that they’re the best team in the State of Hockey. St. Cloud beat down Duluth this past weekend, beating them 5-3 on Friday, followed by an outstanding 5-0 victory on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies have taken any team they’ve played so far by surprise, including coming back from down 3 goals against Alaska Fairbanks to win 6-3.

The Huskies are a force to be reckoned with.

Having scored 33 goals this year already. St. Cloud already has wins against ranked Mankato (10) and Duluth (12). The boys are taking their impressive record of 7-0-0 into this coming weekend against Denver, who’s ranked 3 in the latest USCHO poll.

If SCSU is going to be the team they want to be, they’re going to need junior Jimmy Schuldt and sophomore Jack Poehling to add to their current 5 goals apiece. The two goal leaders have continued to dominate. The Huskies are backed by their two goalies David Hrenak, a freshman, and Jeff Smith. a junior. With the two goalies having 3 and 4 wins apiece SCSU has earned the rank of 5th in the nation for goals against and first out of teams that have played 5 or more games, only allowing 13 in the total of 7 games.

The St. Cloud Huskies are looking like an impressive force in the NCHC.

Lastly, the NCHC is looking like the strongest conference (as usual). The only question that remains is if can SCSU keep a hold in that. If the Huskies have plans to make it to the Frozen Four for the first time since 2013, they need to elevate their game even further. The Husky team has a tough schedule with plans to play the top teams in the nation this season, including Denver, North Dakota and Minnesota, with Denver and North Dakota twice. They will have plenty of opportunities to show off their skills in the remainder of the season. Yet, with the start that they have, things are looking good for the Huskies. They look like the best team in the league, and the rankings finally reflect that this week.
