We have some big news coming out of the Mountain West Conference. According to ESPN, San Diego State gave the Mountain West a written notice this week that the school “intends to resign from the Mountain West Conference.” In the letter that San Diego State gave the MWC, they asked for a “one-month extension given unforeseen delays involving other collegiate athletic conferences beyond our control.” What’s odd regarding their departure is that it doesn’t appear that San Diego State has an offer from a power five conference.

What I could see most likely occurring is San Diego State being an Independent for a season and then joining the PAC-12. This would come off the heels of UCLA and USC departing for the BIG 10. I could also envision San Diego State joining the BIG 12. They recently added Cincinnati, BYU, UCF, and Houston in lieu of losing Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC. I wouldn’t be shocked if San Diego State along with another G5 squad joined the BIG 12.

The opportunities seem endless for the Aztecs, but they just need an offer. Without an offer from a power five conference, they’ll be hanging out in limbo as an Independent.
