Anyone know where the tallest building is? Just looking for somewhere to end it because this is a damn shame. GOATed director David Fincher, the man who made Se7en, Fight Club, and directed the Suit & Tie music video confirmed that the hit Netflix series Mindhunter is done.
In 2020, Fincher signed an exclusive 4-year deal with the streaming platform, but seasons one and two of the series were released between 2017-2019 on Netflix. Following season two which came out on August 16, 2019, Fincher intended to direct three more seasons. That was until November of that same year. The potential third season was reported to have been put on indefinite hold until Fincher finished working on his next film which wound up being Mank. Mank was atrocious and if this initially halted Mindhunter, I’m bummed.
Fincher noted the main reason for Mindhunters’ termination was due to the expensive budget. “It’s a very expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we didn’t attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment.” Over his film career, Fincher has worked with many budget ranges. For what I deem his best film Se7en, the budget was 33 million dollars. Then a film I don’t prefer like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button had a budget of 167 million dollars.
Is Ending Mindhunter The Right Call?
My answer will always be no to this question. Mindhunter was an inquisitive series that broke the mold of anything Netflix had. It centered around the brains of some of America’s most dangerous criminals and their criminal motives. It was truly a genius series with great writing, acting, and cinematography.
Here’s the thing, I can almost understand why this could be a good thing. Almost every show I love and adore dearly goes on for too long. That’s the case for most shows for that fact. I love Entourage, but that goes for too long. The same can be said about Friday Night Lights or Curb Your Enthusiasm. There are exceptions like Breaking Bad, All In The Family, and The Sopranos, but they’re outliers.
Season two of Mindhunter ended in a brilliant way. It concluded with Ford and Tench solving a massive case in Atlanta where African American boys were being murdered by using the data and information they collected from interviewing serial killers. It was a perfect ending to that season because it showed how all of their hard work paid off. I guess now I’ll have to deal with it being the perfect end to the entire series, but that might be okay. Absence makes the heart grow fonder and I’d rather be left wanting more then watch season five of Mindhunter and nitpick it to death. It’s a sad day, but one that could work out in the long run.
