Jimbo Fisher announced on Monday that sophomore Kellen Mond will start over Nick Starkel for the Aggies’ season opener vs Northwestern State. Mond was thrown into the fire last season after Starkel went down with an ankle injury in week one vs UCLA. What followed was one of the most embarrassing collapses by a Division 1 football team in recent memory, as the Aggies blew a 34 point lead. The rest of the season was full of ups and downs for Mond. He showed flashes of his enormous talent, but continuously made freshman mistakes, and eventually lost the starting job once Nick Starkel returned from his injury.

Both Starkel and Mond will see playing time vs Northwestern, so I’ll be more interested to see who starts against Clemson in week two if Mond struggles in the opener, but for now, the Aggies have their QB1.
