The 14th ranked Western Michigan Hockey team saw their first real test this weekend in the Ice Breaker Tournament against 12th ranked Ohio State.

Friday Night

The Buckeyes got on the board early to take an early lead but the Broncos managed to tie things up before the first period ended. Lawton Courtnall fired one past Buckeye goalkeeper Tommy Nappier off of a rebound with four minutes left in the period. The Broncos took the lead in the second off a Brett Van Os goal and held that lead until late in the third period when the Buckeyes were able to tie things up at 2-2.

Despite having a five minute major in OT, the Broncos were not able to capitalize. They took two penalties themselves to cancel out the major and had to fight off a 4-3 just to send the game to a 3v3 OT. The Broncos finally fell in a shootout to send the Buckeyes to the tournament championship.

Saturday Night

Saturday night the Broncos took on 17th ranked Bowling Green. They picked up their first win of the season by a score of 5-2. Goals were scored by Drew Worrad, Ethen Frank, Ronnie Attard, Austin Rueschhoff, and Wade Allison. This was a great first win for the Broncos after Friday nights let down. Freshman goalie Brandon Bussi looked good in the win. His play will be important going forward if this veteran-led Bronco team wants to make a run.

The Western Michigan Hockey team continues their season next weekend with two more games against Bowling Green.
