We have come to expect it over the years, but Ohio State is really damn good. Like, really damn good. Like good enough to be a surprise.

In the Urban Meyer era (2012-20??) Ohio State has won 11 or more games every season. With the offense being the focal point. Having players such as Braxton Miller, J.T. Barrett, Ezekiel Elliott, Michael Thomas, Devin Smith, Curtis Samuel, and many others, you will have a high-flying, explosive offense.

But the Defense has been the heart of this team. Don’t get me wrong, Justin Fields and J.K. Dobbins are the best combo of players in the country, but the rise of this defense can’t be ignored.

The Buckeyes defense is led by Chase Young, who may be the best pass-rusher prospect we have ever seen. The Buckeyes also features Jeffrey Okudah, who will also be a top ten pick in the draft.

The theme of last season was this defense giving up a back-breaking 30-40 yard gain. The Buckeyes ranked 95th in plays allowed of over 20 yards. They were also one of three teams to allow two 90 yard gains, they also allowed 80 yards four times, seventy yards seven times, and sixty yards eight times. The defense was not good.

They are now one of seven teams that have allowed a 20 yard gain less than 15 yards. This is due to the improvements in tackling by the backfield.

Overall, the Buckeyes defense is ranked second in total defense just behind Wisconsin. But……

They are first in scoring defense only allowing 7.9 PPG and are third in total turnover margin with 17 turnovers. They are also first in total tackles for loss and third in sacks with 34.0. Do I need to say any more?

It’s clear that this is the most complete Ohio State team in a long time. Not only is the offense among the best in the nation, the defense IS the best in the nation. I know LSU has the resume, but Ohio State is clearly the best team in football right now. And a lot of credit goes to the defense.
